Democratic and Independent Voter Registration Up in Wake County

From the time between January 2005 and 2008, the rate of voters to register Unaffiliated in Wake County has risen at a larger rate than that of the Democratic or Republican party. But, since the beginning of 2008, both Democratic and Independent registration has exponentially increased when compared to Republicans. Will North Carolina go blue in November?

In 2004, the Democratic Party, led by John Kerry, lost Wake County by approximately 8,000 votes. Since the beginning of 2008, Republicans in Wake County have registered about 1,000 new voters while the Obama campaign has registered 21,000 Democrats and 13,000 Unaffiliated voters in that same time span. Registration among African Americans is up as well - 12,000 since the beginning of the year and 4,000 since the beginning of July.

For Democrats, this is especially a great sign, but for Wake County as a whole, this is even a better indication of democracy at work. Registration is key to winning any election as well as putting forth one’s voice on a local or national scale. Let’s hope the registration rate continues to increase, if not only for the Democratic Party, but for Raleigh, Wake County and democracy as a whole.
